Under the New World Program, UNDP Jordan, and GWC inaugurated the first-ever recycling reverse vending machine in Jordan stationed in Aqaba on the Red Sea. Through the project, UNDP and its partners trained over 7,000 students in 32 schools on the topics of waste management and marine litter reduction and facilitated seven beach clean-ups that engaged over 3,500 people. Based on the project’s impact, Carrefour, a leading French retailer, is partnering with UNDP to offer a discount at their stores for anyone who recycles items in the reverse vending machine. This initiative is now also a part of the Marine Debris Tracker, a citizen-led open source website for geolocating marine litter with over two million entries to date.
